CLASS PROJECT: 2006-07 Class XVII. As the fourteen of us debated on a project in November that would truly make a difference in Door County we came to a unanimous decision after touring the Senior Center to help to expand their Meals on Wheels program. At the time only those seniors living in the city of Sturgeon Bay were eligible to receive meals. Considering Door County is much more spread out, we knew there were elderly people in the rural areas not having even one or two nutritious meals a week. After talking with JoAnn Schley and Bev Knutson the need was way greater than even we imagined. We broke into two groups, one to drive a new route in southern Door County and one to survey the whole county. The survey (Elderly Nutrition Survey) was sent to 100 churches, restaurants, service organizations, private business and other parties of interest. The results were tabulated and presented to Bev and JoAnn at our graduation June 12th. The second group started driving the new route every Tuesday and Thursday to five new elderly people who are now eating a nutritious meal including frozen meals so that they are not forgotten. This is a project that the drivers are still committed to. It has been quite a surprise to us though how hard it is to get people to give up only three hours a month to help feed our elderly in Door County. At the present we only have one gentleman that is driving with us and there is another route just waiting for more drivers but we can’t seem to find the people to drive. If you or anyone you know can take two hours out of your month to help feed a needy senior you will learn it will do you as much good as them. The feeling you get is priceless!
